More Yanks Stuff

As the offseason crawls along, the Yanks need to get their 40 man roster locked ahead of the Rule V draft by tomorrow afternoon.   They currently have two extra spaces, and probably need some more if they want to save more pitchers, Cave and Gamel.  Thus we should probably expect a trade or trade or DFA's over the next 24 hours or so.   Carry on.

If they had to have Hicks, I think it would have made sense to wait until a Gardner (I will believe that Ellsbury can be moved when he is actually moved) trade was completed because now it may seem to prospective trading partners that they have to move an OF.

We saw from Hal's comments that he lacks any understanding of why he should spend (as well as a complete unanchoring from truth and reality).

If the idea is to win, then you spend when a FA target can make a material difference in winning; signing a FA just to fill a real or imagined roster hole does not necessarily make a material difference.

Clearly, he got into Williams as legacy because he has not done anything to indicate that he is actually bright.

I disagree. Now, Hicks is at worst a fourth outfielder, so you're dealing from a position of strength. Still don't really like dealing Murphy for him, but that's a separate discussion entirely.

If they're going to spend money in free agency, spend it on top-tier talent, not middling talent.

The supposed position of catching strength only yielded an OF who hasn't been able to stick in the ML, and who doesn't fill a position of need with the Yankees, and OF was already a position of depth.

Top-tier talent must necessarily factor in age, and because of the recent CBAs, players who fit that description are no longer becoming FA.

I agree, But the 'roider will be...

I agree that it was a poor trade of a valuable resource, unless Hicks improves against RHP, but that's a separate issue for me than whether or not the Yankees suddenly have to trade Gardner. I don't view the situation as a must-trade just because Hicks is there. If anything, they can just rotate the outfielders regularly as is.

I would accept Ortiz into the HOF under two conditions: Edgar Martinez gets in first, and the stigma on PED users is lifted.

Ortiz didn't get a qualifying offer from the Twins in what should have been the beginning of a real prime... then he struggled in Boston, till he suddenly became great... too suspicious and too much of a difference between before and after.

They also might be able to move Carlos Beltran and the final year of his contract, although his partial no-trade protection could be an issue.

I thought he had full no trade protection. Maybe Yanks can find a trade partner and move him.

Of the three outfielders from last season, he is the one I would least like to move

There are few players for whom you break the bank anymore. Harper is one. Shohei Otani is allegedly another.

At 4:20 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Based on his history, Hal is only going to spend when therevis money is coming off. It's the opposite of a real business plan, but that's what he has shown.

At 4:10 AM, Anonymous Bob said...

Agree on Harper after 2018. The cost might be 10/400 at that time with an opt out.

At 7:02 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I'll take the under. That's all media talk. The highest paid player gets about $30m a year. It's not happening.

Yanks talking to Cubs about Gardner for Castro swap

At 7:36 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I don't see how that improves the team.

At 8:03 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

In fact, it could be persuasively argued that it makes them much worse because they would likely lose what they need most: offense.

At 8:13 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

There is a also stuff about Gardner to the Indians for a pitcher.

Again, how do you subtract Gardner's bat for anything other than a comparable hittter without risking being a worse team?

At 8:49 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Feinsand the dutiful idiot: Castro would fill a need for the Yankees at second base, where they currently have a platoon of Dustin Ackley and Rob Refsnyder.

__

There is no fucking need, asshole.

If moves like this are made it is another indication that Cashman has been here waaaaay too long.

At 9:19 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

They still need to protect guys from the Rule 5 today...

At 9:47 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Gardner for Castro would suck. What is this sudden obsession with players who don't get on base?

At 9:58 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

My guess is that Cashman, if he made the deal, views him as undervalued, but unless he quickly middled him somewhere else (like to the Mets), it would be very discouraging.

At 10:26 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Man, Jack Curry has really jumped the shark since leaving the NYT and joining YES, apart from his serial homerism, he is trying to pretend that Miller, Betances, and Chapman would put them closer to the WS.

Putting aside the cost, which would almost certainly include top prospects, how is the pen a bigger weakness than the offense or the fragile rotation?

Seriously, it's almost like you have to be complete idiot to write/opine professionally about sports these days.

At 10:40 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

@JonHeymanCBS: there's been no talk of gardner for castro to this point. NYY seek pitching in deals. they dont mind ackley/refsnyder combo

Good. Would be an awful trade.

@Ken_Rosenthal: #Rays claim RHP Chase Whitley on waivers from #Yankees.

At 10:57 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

They waived Chase Whitley and the Rays claimed him. That makes 3 open spots on the 40.

At 11:18 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Don't mind. Jeez, how short-sighted.

I will predict that if you played Ackley and Hicks everyday in the OF, Ackley would have a higher WAR.

He can't play 2B though.

At 1:20 PM, Anonymous Stottlemyre68 said...

Not insane, all things considered. Whitley was coming off TJ, older than most of the other pitchers on the bubble, and not as good as any of the guys he was younger than, except possibly for Cotham. If it's between him and exposing Andujar, given what has been reported about Andujar's upside, I go with protecting Andujar. There is a big group of pitchers who have shown they can pitch at the big league level but haven't established themselves as regulars. It's getting to be time to fish or cut bait with them and we'll see how well the Yanks do with this crew.

At 3:12 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Yanks added Barbato, Gamel and Rookie Davis to the 40. Left Cave and others unprotected.

At 4:19 PM, Anonymous Stottlemyre68 said...

Thanks for the update, Phil --I'm least comfortable with leaving Andujar exposed. Maybe they're gambling that he's so far away that no team will want to keep him on their 25-man roster, and maybe they know something big that we all don't (obviously they know a whole lot more than we do). Andujar showed an encouraging ability to adjust to each next level at a young age for that level

Happy Thanksgiving all! Mike, hope your Dad's doing well.

Thanks Stot! He's gone thru two rounds of chemo. Will find out in a couple of weeks if it's working. Happy Thanksgiving!

Warren wants to be a starter, and since he was the most consistent start of the season it's kind of absurd that he might not be. Some aspects of their decision-making is inexplicable

Dodgers signed Diaz.

If it really will be a platoon then Ackley will get the most playing time at 2B with Ryan coming in late for defense.

Hal hates him some Cubans.

The Astros may want Miller, they have the pieces if Cashman is smart enough to get the right ones.

At 9:10 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Joe Sherman goes from being stupid to not so stupid all the time, but the Yankees are obsessed with pitching and if he has any true insight into their thinking there's some scary shit here:

Harper is saying Cano wants to be a Yankee again. OK, if they take Ellsbury and CC. Otherwise, no, unless the MLBPA and Cano agree to rescind the last three years of his deal.

At 10:33 AM, Anonymous Bob said...

Pass on Cano. He is a lazy ballplayer. So happy he walked.

Cash should engage LAD in talks fo Miller
