Adios, Tyler Austin

This morning, the Yanks DFA'd Tyler Austin, bringing to an end what once looked like a great draft story.  Before his wrist and other injuries, Tyler could flat out hit.  The Yanks took TA back in the 13th round of 2010 draft, and he embodied eveything they look for in a player as far as character is concerned.  He was 100% ballplayer and teammate, and not only could he hit, but he used to steal bases at will, even though he lacked a plus run tool.

He'd beaten testicular cancer before he was picked, and when he came to the Yanks, he didn't really have a position.  They tried him in the corners and he ended up mostly playing RF for them.  He was on a rocket ride to the bigs before the injuries, even prompting Cashman to refer to him as an "elite" prospect at one point.   Then the hand and wrist injuries started, and his ascension was derailed.

I'm hoping he'll make it through waivers, and continue his rehab and resurrection with the Yanks, but he is from Atlanta, and I am pretty sure the Braves, who are loaded with former Yankee execs, will grab him, like they've grabbed so many other former Yankee prospects.

I wish Tyler the greatest success going forward from this sad day.

I also wonder if Slade has a future with this organization.

He gets hurt an awful lot from the way he plays.

That's why I hope Mason Williams returns and continues to develop. They need the outfield depth due to Ellsbury and Garnder's propensity to get hurt, and Slade is hurt too much himself.

As much as I like him, Gardner's injuries are why I have said I would look to trade at what would seem to be peak value. It is a business, after all.

But that's not what they do.

Gamel/Judge appear to be at the top of the replacement pecking order next season.

And really, Beltran has been very good offensively, almost stealthily for some reason, maybe his low HR total.

They should not, however, go into to next season relying on Teix/A-Rod/Beltran as their big bats, however, due to contracts, they almost certainly will.

Beltran's handedness splits, almost identical:

v. RHP: .286 .346 .481 .827 10 HR 22 2B
v. LHP: .274 .343 .484 .827 3 HR 9 2B

But he his AB ratio is almost 2:1 batting LH.

Forgot that Tyler had survived cancer. Good luck to him.

Montero slipping back again, but the trade has to be viewed in terms of opportunity costs as much as that Pineda is better the very rare times he can remain on the field.

"Despite Brian Cashman saying yesterday that he’d prefer not to use Alex Rodriguez at first base, Girardi said today that “you have to think about” using A-Rod at first against lefties. Tomorrow will be the first test. The Yankees face another lefty tomorrow, giving Girardi an opportunity to play Rodriguez at first if he thinks that’s the best way to go."

How could it possibly be the best way to go???

Are these two even on the same page? As much as we gripe about Girardi on here, if they aren't, then something has to give. Methinks a come to Jesus meeting in the offseason is necessary.

Yanks are back to being overmatched by low 90s fastballs.

Teixeira is hurt (again), and ARod may simply be out of gas. At least Bird is getting experience that will be valuable going forward. But without those two playing and performing like they had been, this is a pedestrian team.

Didn't realize Porcello had an ERA north of 5. Not hitting him is unacceptable.

Every media person wanted more pitching. The independent thinkers here wanted offense.

It's now offically a joke that they didn't DL Tex when he was first hurt, or at least before the rosters expanded. They say he's on crutches. I am still guessing compartment syndrome.

This is Porcello's second straight good start since coming off the DL and rehab. So maybe he figured something out.

It was also a joke they didn't call up a positional player before the Atlanta series, though they ended up getting through it without needing one. Still dumb.
