Yanks Win

So, inconsistent Eovaldi is now 8-2.  Garrett Jones had the big blow as the Yankees used their 1968 version of the formula -- shutdown pitching and a single homerun for the 3-1 win.  Betances was once again used for a 4 out save.  Shreve was also good again, though Wilson wasn't so Girardi panicked.   Nice to get a win, at least.

I hate the 4 out saves this time of year. I hate Girardi and whomever is permitting him to put players at risk.

Once Miller comes back things will be back to normal

I've had a lot of thoughts brewing lately about this team, so here they are.

A huge bit of news this week is the fact that the Yankees opted for Warren to go to the pen over Sabathia, a move that was almost universally panned by those who follow the team closely. At first, my natural reaction was to cry "incompetency!" in reaction to this move. The more I look at it, though, the more I think it's simply a difference in philosophy as to how a team should be run between the fans and ownership/management.

Firstly, let's get this out of the way: Cashman's innings limit excuse is complete and utter bullshit. Warren threw at least 150 innings in both 2011 and 2012, so 170-80 or so shouldn't be a problem. Cashman likely realizes it's BS, but the move to the rotation from the pen at the start of the season offers him a convenient excuse to feed to the media.

The reality is, this team does not value winning the way we fans do. Ownership sees this team as, first and foremost, a way to make money. Thus, the priority is two-fold: make as much money as possible, while simultaneously doing what they perceive to be getting the most value out of what they're paying players. This explains the decision to leave CC in the rotation despite the fact that he's almost an automatic loss every time he takes the hill. No one, Cashman included, would argue that CC's numbers vs. Warren's numbers could possibly justify this move. Girardi basically outed ownership/management when he said CC would stay in the rotation because "that's what we're paying him to do." The team sees moving CC to the pen as not maximizing his value relative to the contract, so it won't happen, period.

Of course, we as fans would point out the concept of sunk cost and mention CC's propensity to struggle the second or third time through the lineup as reasons he should be a long reliever. But they don't see it that way. To them, moving CC to the pen would mean "we're spending $25M on a reliever, and that's preposterous." I'm sure this is frustrating to many who work in the organization, especially those who no doubt want younger players to succeed, but at this point, they have to realize for whom they work.

It sucks for us, sure, because we don't have a vested interest in this team outside of it doing well. But as long as the same ownership and management is in place, nothing is going to change. Might as well just accept it.

Miller's absence is no excuse for the manager's negligence.

Sherman had two trade proposals, one good, one sickening.

1) Beltran to the Angels with the Yankees eating salary.
2) Zobrist, who he said would cost more than Refs and Mitchell. I wouldn't trade either for him.

That's the problem. Why can't Mitchell get a shot. Or Severino?

Why is there all this insanity about trading for a starter when they have two good in-house options, as well as Warren?

This team is so poorly run when you factor in their payroll advantage, it's sickening.

There is a reason they suck at development, and that it it.

If the Yankees are absolutely convinced Refs will never be at least a decent defender at second, I would be OK with parting with him for the right piece. Given Zobrist's age, I'm not convinced he's that right player.

The payroll is ironically responsible for the only reason this team is above .500 -- ARod and Teix. But for it, this team would have a protected pick after this season.

Not me, because they are almost always wrong.

And by the way, for all the talk about adding a starter, what difference does it make if Pineda and Tanaka are average starters, as they have been?

ERA+
Tanaka 102
Pineda 97

Of course, their best starter, with a 113 ERA+, was removed from the rotation. The perennially underachieving New York Yankees in a nutshell.

I expect both Tanaka and Pineda to improve, and given the current standings, I can't really fault the team if they try to make improvements, as long as they don't gut the farm doing so. It's not like last season, when it was painfully obvious this team had no postseason hopes. This year, the Yankees actually have a shot.

Regarding 4-out saves; Wouldn't it be better to use both Betances and Miller as closers who can go more than an inning, so you don't have to use them on consecutive games?

At 6:17 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Mike, my point is that Mitchell and Severino are better than what they can get in any reasonable trade

I could normally understand the anger folks have with using Betances for more than an inning. In this case, you have no bone to pick. Besides for the fact Miller is out, and Girardi did not want Wilson facing Pulois, Betances did not pitch in several days, and there was an off-day the next day. No problem using him for 4-5 outs yesterday.

Sorry - complaining about yesterday's bullpen usage is pure wrong. Again, I am talking just yesterday.

At 8:23 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

It's a recent pattern. Sometimes you just have to risk losing games in June/early July.

At 8:24 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Given that Betances hasn't pitched much in recent weeks, I've no problem with the pen usage last night. Wilson was un-good, and they needed a win.

At 8:25 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

3 of his last 5 outings are 4 out saves.

And he has got him up and not brought him in at times.

At 8:41 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

If they are so concerned with winning, why do they play so many bad players when they have younger, better options?

At 11:55 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

It's not that they don't want to win at all, it's just that winning is second to other priorities.

At 12:08 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Sure, but why do they pursue that goal in a way that costs them more money and limits their future profit potential?

After all, attendance and TV ratings are down.

They need more compelling stories on their roster.

At 1:42 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Because the concept of sunk cost is foreign to them.

BTW,
@octonion: The Cardinals have fired Scouting Director Chris Correa. Wow.

I would scoop him up in a heartbeat if I were him. Of course, watch the Cubs, Red Sox or Dodgers get him.

*if I were the Yankees

At 1:55 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

It would impress me if they do, but part of the problem with having a mediocre (at best) GM in place for so long is complacency.

At 2:06 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

They're not forward-thinking enough to do it, like the aforementioned teams are. Heck, I could even see the Rays getting him.

At 2:22 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

The Yanks have actually been pretty aggressive in picking up scouting talent over the last 6 years or so. Wouldn't surprise me, especially if he just took one for the team.

At 3:51 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

I would make him head of scouting tomorrow. What the Cardinals do makes me envious.

At 4:56 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Maybe his cheating has something to do with that. He'd have to amaze me over a long period of time before I gave him a leadership position.

Then it's the person at the top

At 5:18 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Then what is?

At 1:45 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

What?

Beltran DL'd hopefully forever.

Flores up.

Skipping CC's start. Yay!

Yay Teix

DFA Jones

Grego is improving. Would these please give their own young players patience as well.

At 7:49 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Greg Bird was just promoted to Triple-A. That's him, Judge and Severino, and were Jagielo not hurt, he'd probably be in Scranton, too.
