Yanks Overpay for Ackley

So, the Yanks' first move of the trade season was to send Ramon Flores and Jose Ramirez to Seattle for Dustin Ackley.   This move is ponderous on a few levels, one of which is that Ackley is not an upgrade over Drew.  What's more, Ramon Flores is better than Ackley.  Flores was never going to be a full time Yankee, most likely, but he should have been saved for a bigger and better trade.  He can play OF and gets on base, and his power has grown each year.   Jose Ramirez should have been the only thing going to Seattle.  Meanwhile, we'll see what else is up, because right now we have three different versions of Drew.

Please win this year, Yankees, because the poor upper management is eventually going to sink you.

Billy, in response to your other post... I hear what you're saying RE: Mitchell. But as far as Ackley goes, this appears to be yet another instance of "get a guy who sucks and hope he turns it around" instead of playing Refsnyder. If more moves are on the way, I'll reconsider, but for now, it just seems rather silly.

What they do with Refs will be the tell.

At 2:20 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

SWB beat writer Donnie Collins says he thinks they try to make him a Brock Holt-type player. If true, that changes my opinion considerably.

The corresponding roster move(s) will be the tale.

At 2:21 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

They can prove that by bringing up Refs.

At 2:22 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I'd be willing to trade Refs for something that really improves the team because I believe he is in the second of third tier of prospects we finally control. I do think he will be a major leaguer and should be for us, unless a really good deal comes along.

Ackley has more versatility in my opinion .. He also has an absurdly low BABIP, which means he has had some bad luck .... Flores is what on on the OF depth chart? Behind, slade, Mason and judge ... He's beyond expandable and this is coming from a big time Flores fan .... Jose just doesn't trust his stuff -- if he pitched like Didgo Moreno did the other night, he would still be in the bigs. We have 4/5 other people like him, so I also bs e no problem with this ... We can categorize this as buy low because we did but Ackley swing is Taylor made for this stadium... As I mentioned I the previous post, since he had no options left I am 100% expecting another move to occur soon -- what that is exactly is tbd but I anxiously await this move. If we leave this deadline with severino, judge, bird, mAteo still on the roster, I'll be happy

At 2:23 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

I agree, Phil. I'm open to trading him, but it has to be in the right deal.

@BryanHoch: Michael Pineda said the plan is 7-10 days without throwing. He doesn't seem too concerned.

Of course, they never seem too concerned until they are.

At 2:26 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

His LD% is 13.3%, so of course his BABIP is going to be low, just like Drew's.

At 2:27 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

I think people wouldn't be pining for Refsnyder so much if production at second base was even average. It's just so painful to watch that they want SOMETHING different.

At 2:27 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Just like Roberts last year. Veterans are allowed to suck, homegrown kids, nope.

At 2:29 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

@LoHudYankees: Nick Goody and Bryan Mitchell have each been recalled by Yankees

What's the point with Goody if Girardi won't pitch him, unless he's only insurance for a few days?

At 2:32 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Andrew Bailey was promoted to AAA by the way.

At 2:32 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

They have been trying to get Ackley for years.

Meanwhile Pineda to the DL, Cotham sent down and I don't know what the other move to clear the third space is.

I think sticking with Didi and getting better play from him makes us wonder what if Ref were given a similar chance.

At 2:37 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

At least Didi seems to be showing something for all of the patience given to him. Drew, bless his heart, just isn't getting it done.

At 2:45 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

It is amazing how a young player can eventually relax and let his talent show through when he has the comfort of knowing he isn't playing for his job every single night...every single play.

At 2:51 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Bottom line: If Refs is made the everyday 2B, I am fine with this move. If not, then no.

At 3:04 PM, Blogger Billy Martin said...

I honestly don't see how this can be seen as a bad move -- we have a 40 man roster crunch and Flores is a tweener -- not enough power for a corner spot and not emough defense for center -- I have always been his biggest fan but realize that he is what he is ---- Mariners player development in regards to hitters is the worst in the game -- I have faith that getting Ackley away from Safeco will be a huge boost -- I played with Dustin for multiple years and I'm a tad biased but he has great discipline and should flourish here as a complimentary piece instead of someone who's looked to carry the offense -- his discipline will carry him and his pull power will play at the stadium

At 3:06 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

The Yankees' player development with regard to hitters is not exactly exemplary.

At 3:08 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Cool to hear you played with Dustin, Billy. Was that at UNC or in high school? And any insight as to why the M's are so bad at developing hitters? From what I've read, their front office comes off as immensely dysfunctional.

Lawyer, you're right, BTW. Giving Didi assurances that he would be allowed to work through the inevitable early struggles has paid dividends. That's the approach they need to be taking with all of their assets.

At 3:12 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

And as far as being expected to carry the offense, I think it's inarguable that the Mariners gave up the ghost on that a long time ago.

Seager has developed very well. In fact, the Yankees haven't developed a hitter like Seager in years.

They added Cano last year, and Cruz this year.

So there the context is not as you make it out to be.

At 3:14 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

It feels to me, since they've been after him for so long, that either pro scouts or the analytics guys see an easy fix for Ackley. Maybe a combination of both departments.

Two more things: Rothschild and the hitting coaches are really seeming to pay dividends on the coaching up side. See Eovaldi, Didi and getting Headley back on track.

And LiNJ, they changed all the development people and as you can see hitters stopped stalling out at AA this year. I really think the development program is going to catch up with the scouting program.

At 3:19 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Yeah, they changed everyone but the person in charge, yet that is the most important piece.

At 3:19 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

@DanBarbarisi: Girardi said that if they were to use Ackley at 2nd, they'd have to work him out there first. Seems more ominous for Jones than Drew, then.

At 3:21 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

LINJ, I'd actually be fine with Cashman if he would simply stop letting Girardi have his (bad) comfort players and give the youth an extended shot.

At 3:28 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I think change is healthy when a team underperforms it's abundant advantages for so long.

Beyond that, when he says offense is the keys/kingdom, I will be forced to rethink.

Giants signed James Jones

At 4:19 PM, Blogger Billy Martin said...

I was typing a long response and hit the wrong button on my phone and it went away -- to answer yor question Mike, I played with Dustin in AAU through high school and then we worked out together for freshman year-- I was good friends with his two teammates @ UNC -- garret gore and Timmy fed. In regards to mariners player development, just look at the top players they've ruined that were "locks" to be stud hitters -- Smoak, Ackley and Montero --- i'm sure I'm missing others but Smoak was one of the best pure hitters I've ever Played with or against (Pedro Alvarez is the other) and the fact that he stalled out is on the Mariners development --- im very hopeful that getting away from that environment will be beneficial but we'll see.

Dodgers DFA's Morse and others today. What brutal inefficiency.

At 4:35 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Btw, Brady Lail is making his scheduled start for Trenton and Gary Sanchez has crushed a two run bomb for Scranton!

At 4:58 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Have the Mets embarrassed themselves today?

Billy, I watched Alvarez a bit as a student at Alabama when the Tide played Vanderbilt. I thought for sure he'd be a stud at the MLB level, though the power certainly has translated. Smoak is someone whose lack of success baffles me, just like Montero.

At 5:10 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

So Gomez is going to the Astos?

At 5:11 PM, Blogger Billy Martin said...

Mike -- Pedro was unbelievable -- he had full ride offers to EVERY college in America -- I still remember when the draft came around his senior year in HS -- phone calls every second asking what he wanted to be bought out of his scholarship but he refused -- seriously, the dude could hit anything -- the only player I ever saw come close to his ability was Sonny Gray -- yes, the pitcher for the A's... He was on the same level as Pedro , which just shows you how special he really is.

CC continues to kill us.

At 5:46 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Retire, CC. You're hurting the team.

At 5:55 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Yeah, if he and Drew are all about the clubhouse ruling, management has lost control

At 6:01 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I don't understand this mentality that declining/washed up veterans are safer and deserving of never-ending excuses.

Great teams don't do that.

At 6:26 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Get CC out of there. Why call up Mitchell and have him miss a start when Girardi won't make a move?

Billy, when I found out Alvarez was a Red Sox draftee out of high school, I was quite thankful he opted to go to Vandy. I wished the Yankees would draft him, though I knew better than to think he'd be there by the time they picked.

So, I heard Ellsbury misplayed a ball while Beltran sat in right sipping pina coladas, is that true?

Here's a Twitter take I agree with:
Jed Weisberger ‏@jedleyq 2h2 hours ago
Again, CC was a great warrior. Now, unfortunately, he is done. If he stays in rotation, will lose 17 or 18 games on a team way above .500.

And then some guy named Phil posted this:

Girardi is asleep and dreaming stupid dreams.

At 7:57 PM, Blogger TB said...

When CC pitches I don't even turn the game on until I know it's about the 5th inning. After the 1st inning it looks as if CC ran a marathon and every inning after the opponent is threatening.... tough to watch ..

That one's on Girardi.

OK, in all seriousness, you can't keep starting CC. You just can't.

CC Sabathia is going to keep starting, Girardi said (again): “You have to keep working on it and try to get better each time he goes out."

At 10:23 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I suspect we'll have Kimbrel by the time I wake up out here on the West coast.

At 10:28 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Unless the Padres come down from their demands, I doubt the Yankees get Kimbrel. I'm thinking he goes to Houston.

At 10:33 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I think Houston is being used to try to drive up our offer.

At 11:07 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Or mayb not. Seems like the Astros and Padres are making a big trade.

At 5:38 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

What are you willing to give up for Kimbrel?

At 5:47 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Wade or Cave and a non-Severino pitcher or two.

At 6:16 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I don't like the idea in general because it could cause problems with asset allocation as Betances gets more expensive, but ok at that price. They also need to keep Mirchell now.

Pineda's injury is not just about the firearm/elbow. His mechanics/kinesiology issues could be ongoing.

At 6:23 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

And to take stress off his arm, would it surprise you if at some point Pineda became a reliever? I can see it.

At 6:23 AM, Blogger Michael said...

Not sure how feasible or costly, but Rosenthal threw out an idea of the Yankees possibly getting Ross in a bigger deal. he did indicate cost would likely be too much

At 6:35 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I would rather go with Mitchell and Severino.

At 6:41 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

The Red Sox like Tyson Ross quite a bit and have been operating “very quietly” in the trade market for starting pitching, reports ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick (on Twitter). Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweets that the Red Sox have talked to the Padres, with Ross as one possible target, though he notes that they also have the prospect depth to expand a deal to include Craig Kimbrel.

At 6:48 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Sherman is saying the sticking point on Kimbrel is Mateo.

At 7:22 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Carter Capps?

At 7:35 AM, Anonymous Bob said...

Severino is approaching his innings limit for the year... not sure what it is but it's getting close

At 7:49 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

He's got 50 or so left, unless they have a different formula now.

Btw, there's a new Deadline post.
