Yanks: Ellsbury to the 15/Slade On the Way

So, Jacoby Ellsbury is headed for the 15 Day DL and they are calling up their former first round pick, Slade Heathcott.  Only problem is, Slade's not on the 40 man roster anymore so they're going to have to make some sort of a move.  Slade's been slumping a bit in AAA after a great start, and maybe this is just what he needs to get going again.  He's a great defender and still has lots of upside as a hitter.

UPDATE: Chase Whitley was moved to the 60 day DL so that Slade could be added back to the 40.

Petit and Rogers both suck. They can waive both just for fun.

Slade's reemergence is a wonderful story, maybe more compelling than any they currently have. I hope he becomes a fixture without any return trip the minors.

It's not like they don't desperately need youth with offensive upside.

Looks like Judge might have been promoted to AAA.

I think Judge is nursing some kind of thigh injury. Day-to day thing.

Not sure about the promotion to AAA. Maybe not, since the Yankee FO might believe that Heathcott returns after the 2 weeks are up, and Ellsbury is back.

This thing is close to spinning out of control. Playing it safe is killing them.

At 7:24 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Unfortunately, Anon is likely correct. And thus the cycle continues...

Rooting for Slade too. He seems to have worked really hard to overcome both his injury setbacks and personal issues.

MBN -- Thanks for the info & hope you get a chance to see some of those games.

At 7:49 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Some people think I'm negative, but I'm really not until I have to be.

So I will think that Slade will start until he doesn't.

At 8:08 AM, Anonymous MBN said...

Lawyer;

In other news, it's raining outside until it's not!! :)

I see your point though. Sometimes, some of the moves the FO makes are head-scratchers. Bringing up Heathcott, who has missed approx. 50% of his development time the past 5 seasons due to injury, to sit on the bench, would be one of those head-scratchers.

At 8:49 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

That's true, at least in that I can't control either, but...

It's great when luck is on your side, as it was for the first 4 or 5 weeks, but when it turns, be realistic and adapt creatively.

Quick fixes are probably going to blow up in your face.

They have some young talent now. Fans will show patience if they see a real plan in place .

The Knicks are in a similar situation. Getting one of the top two picks would have given them a tremendous leg up, but since that didn't happen, they have to come to grips with the fact that any viable plan to get back to being true contenders is going to take longer.

But if they let the Melo mistake and the insistence on the triangle impact every decision they make, this could get very ugly.

At 9:52 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

I'm basing my agreement with Anon off of Girardi's tendencies, I.E. continuing to give Drew at-bats at Pirela's expense. No faith Heathcott gets anything more than an occasional start.

Here's why I will retain my optimism. One word: defense.

I think Slade is up to play simply because he needed to be put on the 40man. I guess we shall see.

Slade is not starting ...

At 1:21 PM, Blogger Billy Martin said...

FUCK. And Will Beatty tore his Pec in the the off-season conditioning program.

When it rains it pours.

At 1:28 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I'll take the road less traveled again (iow, the optimistic path). Maybe Joey G. is giving him an acclimation day.

If it keeps up, fuck them all.

At 1:30 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

As for Beatty, that is why as appealing as say Cooper would have been, given their mid-round OL failures over several drafts, and Eli's age and immobility, they were in a bind.

They should look into waiving Beatty.

At 2:45 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Not only is Heathcott not starting, but Pirela is once again sat in favor of Drew.

I'll have some of Lawyer's negativity milkshake. :-)

At 3:06 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I would say that I drink Cashman and Girardi's milkshake, but that basically screws me too.

The Cashman of 2005 would have forced young players on his manager in this situation.

The shark, however, be jumped.

At 3:29 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

BTW, Mason Williams is quietly having a good season. Suddenly, all of the outfielders are performing.

At 3:31 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

While Heathcott’s not in the lineup tonight, manager Joe Girardi said he expects Heathcott to get some starts. He wouldn’t commit to a true center field platoon, but that seems likely given Chris Young’s struggles against right-handed pitching. Girardi said he wants to keep Brett Gardner in left field.

“I’ll use (Heathcott) for late innings for defense, and I could use him as a pinch runner,” Girardi said. “But he’s going to get some starts. I’m going to put him in the lineup and see how he does.”
__

Is all of this in Girardi's hand? If so, that's ridic, but maybe it isn't, and this is the corporate view.

At 3:35 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Ellsbury sounds like a lateral collateral ligament:

Girardi didn’t give any fresh insight into how long Jacoby Ellsbury will be on the disabled list. He said the Yankees will wait until Friday before setting any sort of timetable. “I think until you go through a few days of treatment and see how he responds to that, and he sees Dr. Ahmad,” Girardi said. “We’re just not ready to give you a timetable. It’s not something that requires surgery, so we’re not holding anything that’s doom and gloom. It’s just, you have to see how he responds over the next few days and what Ahmad thinks.”

...

The injury is specifically located in the ligament on the outside of the right knee. Girardi said it’s an unusual injury given the circumstances. “I’ve never seen it done,” Girardi said. “But we’ve seen Manny Machado tear his ACL taking a swing. It just looked like Jake’s heel got caught in the ground. Sometimes a guy’s spike gets caught. But I’ve never seen it happen like that, with the outside.”

At 3:43 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

A good thing the Yankees have OF depth all of a sudden. If there's one negative to Ellsbury and Gardner, it's their propensity to get hurt.

DFA Headley

At 7:15 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Another loss, and it's painfully obvious this team is at a crossroad.

It's not just about maintaining first place in the AL East. It's about whether or not this team is truly committed to getting younger, or if it will let the size of its contracts and/or the veteran-ness of its players dictate the status quo.

I get that Young started off hot, but he's been putrid since the calendar turned to May. Beltran has been all but useless with the bat save for a few games here and there, and his defensive inabilities were a major factor in tonight's loss. McCann has stunk. Headley has stunk.

Drew, well, he gets most of the fans' ire, but he's hardly alone in the lack of offensive production.

Pirela hit in the minors. Heathcott has finally seemed to put it together. Refsnyder has settled in nicely. Mitchell could do no worse than Capuano. It's time to stop the bullshit and start giving these guys a legitimate chance to contribute. No more sitting Pirela half the time because Joe thinks it's just going to magically click for Drew because reasons. No more signing journeymen like Capuano when Mitchell can do what he does for the league minimum. No more playing Beltran/Young over Heathcott.

Do the right thing, and give youth a chance, and maybe I won't have to keep ordering milkshakes from LINJ's Real Talk Express Malt Shop.

At 7:53 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Yes, and think about what has made them relevant to this point even with the slump, Teix and A-Rod OPSing .900. That wasn't forseeable to anyone. And it is very unlikely to last.

Every year they just add more bad contracts. Blame whomever you want; absolve whomever you want.

Either way, something has to change if they are ever going to get out from under this shit

At 9:40 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

And Steinbrenner still yearns for a day when he can rely more on internal upgrades and doesn’t need dramatic, in-season makeovers. That day might not be too far away, he professed.
“That, hopefully, is the goal in years to come, when (our) long-term contracts hopefully are over,” Steinbrenner said. “Some of these young kids — the way they do for every other team it seems — step up, step in and get the job done. “

They're ready now you moronic buffoon. And if your baseball people aren't telling you that, get new people.

Of Yankees next 31 games, 19 are at home. Only 11 of the 31 against teams currently over .500.

So it's ok to not to be able to hit, like Grego and Drew, or not be able to field or hit, like Beltran, but Refs is held to a different standard?

Let alone that Headley and McCann are stealing money.

Got it.

At 9:57 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Refsnyder not being ready with the glove is debatable depending on who you ask that watches the AAA team regularly. And even if we assume he's not, there is no excuse for Pirela and Heathcott not to get as many at-bats as possible.

At 12:28 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Is Headley going to be permitted to block Jagielo when he is ready?

Just another crazy contract for a very average player over his career, with injury issues.

At 1:00 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Mason Williams was promoted to AAA. A well-deserved promotion that hopefully means Heathcott will be sticking around the big leagues for a while.

At 3:47 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Will any of them get an extended chance, or do we have to watch Beltran suck at defense?

Yet, that doesn't seem to matter because he is old and expensive.

Headley was a dumb signing, just like Beltran.

Some good news: @RailRidersTT: That'll do it for Tanaka as Elmore flies to right. 3 ip, 2 h, 0 r, 0 bb, 2 k. He was getting better, too. Good signs for the Yanks.

No, you have no idea id Grego or Beltran will hit more. You are just pretending to fit some trollish narrative.

And yes, lots of hitters earn their money, especially those that are cost-controlled, like Refs, Slade, and others would be.

The current way isn't working. They get less bang for the buck than almost any team in MLB.

The only reason they aren't buried in the basement is Tex and A-Rod's respective .900 OPS.

Not pitching. Not defense.

Phil said his velo is back up. Unlike you, he has a name. I will go with him.

Anonymous posters need to get handles because I'm going to start deleting their posts. Too hard keeping them straight.

At 8:13 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Anon, I'm going to address your points, but I'm going to first say that I doubt you actually believe half the stuff your post and are mostly doing this to get a rise out of us. If I'm wrong then I apologize, but since you once proposed trading for Hamels and asking the Phillies to include Chase Utley, who currently has a slash line of .169/.250/.292/.542, it's difficult to take you seriously.

Yes, Refsnyder made another error last night; however, it would be useful if you actually provided some context for the error. The error was on a routine fly ball that Refsnyder dropped. While there is certainly no excuse for dropping a routine fly ball, it's a mistake that can be easily corrected. Jed Weisberger, who sees SWB play regularly, had this to say on Refsnyder's defense: "Refsnyder seems to have gotten the hang of the shifts. That's progress."

While neither he nor I are ready to declare his defense "ready," at this point, I find it most curious that you seem to have been OK with allowing Didi to work through his early mistakes because you think he's going to hit. There is zero evidence to suggest he is ever going to be an offensive plus, while there is ample evidence to suggest Refsnyder will. Thus, your support of Didi but not Refsnyder is quite curious, but again, I'm pretty sure you're just trolling us.

And after committing seven errors in April, he's only had two so far in May, and we're only a little over a week away from the calendar hitting June. That's improvement, much like what Didi has shown at the major-league level.

Calling Pirela a "utility infielder" suggests he can't hit, which actually contradicts his recent minor league numbers. Put simply, the fact that Drew and Gregorius continue to get at-bats at Pirela's expense highlights the problem this team has with showing veteran ball players far too much loyalty.

Beltran will get better and we need to just support the player? Your patronizing tone aside, you once again fail to provide any evidence that he will suddenly turn things around at age 38, when it is far more likely that this is what he is now: a .237/.271/.389/.661 hitter who can't play defense, which is apparently important for Refsnyder but not all that big a deal for the over-the-hill player who isn't contributing anything.

Beltran was a dumb signing at the time it was made, and it's looking even dumber now with Heathcott on the roster, who was relegated to PR/late-inning defensive duties on his first night in the Bronx. I mean, how laughable is that, especially since Beltran's defensive miscues likely cost the team the game?

Headley was another dumb signing, as they gave him four years when he was clearly declining and was hitting .229/.296/.355/.651 when they traded for him last summer. Yes, he did much better when he arrived in the Bronx, but the man has chronic back problems and hasn't ever really hit for power outside of one season.

McCann is one signing I can forgive, in that I'm honestly surprised he hasn't done much better. But Phil has alluded to his declining walk rate in recent seasons, so maybe that's something the team should have paid attention to. Regardless, yes, he, like Beltran and Drew and Headley, is stealing money because he isn't hitting anywhere near what he should be to justify his annual salary. Using the, "Well, there aren't a lot of veterans playing well enough to justify their salary," excuse is laughably flawed reasoning.

Finally, reports of Lindgren's velocity vary depending on who you speak with. Saying he would for sure get lit up based on a velocity reading that has been contradicted isn't doing the player justice. Bring him up and see what he has. I hope the Yankees don't treat him like they did Mark Melancon and give up too soon, only to see him excel elsewhere.

At 8:19 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

*To add a point on McCann, if anything, this lack of production highlights the Yankees' inability to develop a catcher despite making it a focal point in drafts since 2005. While they were right to make it a focal point, the fact that the best "production" they've gotten out of home-grown catchers is Montero being traded for Michael Pineda, that's pretty damning, and it's why the team had to overpay for McCann only to watch him struggle with the bat.

Phil, thanks for making the registration rule. I agree it helps, because as I said, I'm pretty sure there is more than on Anon.

All I am asking for is to let one or two young position playing prospects to get regular PT every season.

Hal keeps talking about doing it when the existing contracts expire.

The problem is that they take on more contracts every offseason.

That they (any of them) may think that the cost/benefit of Drew and/or Young supersedes that of Slade and/or Pirela is jawdropping.

I think the team is convinced it can take the Brett Gardner approach with its positional prospects and start them out as part-timers. The problem is that Melky, Damon and Matsui were all productive members of the team themselves when Gardner first came up, while guys like Beltran, Drew, Headley and Young (in May) aren't.

At 11:29 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

If one looks at Gardner's swing in the minors and early majors and they think that progress can be duplicated, they are smoking some really good weed. Wacky weed or some such.

In fact, if you are looking for a way to credit Kevin Long, Gardner, not the long declining Granderson, would be the exemplar.

At 11:30 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I agree with the larger point.

For years, they had a big offensive cushion to offset develop curves, and they only used it for Cano and Gardner.

So that model is now mooted.
