Yanks Complete Sweep of Rays

Yanks just beat the Rays for the 3 game sweep.  Pineda was really shaky in the first which you could tell the moment he walked the first batter.    He got a bit better, and shows all the signs of being an ace at some point - but he's currently 2-0 with a 5.00 ERA, so he ain't that yet.   Sort or reminiscent of Randy Johnson's time in pinstripes, so far this year.  Wins but an inflated ERA.   Betances is looking more and more like his old self, but the fastball is still not where it was - like Tanaka.   Miller gave up a leadoff double in the 9th to some chump with an HGH beard, then K'd the side, swinging, which was Goosian of him.  Great win.

Mitchell and Severino were both dominant.   Mitchell's ERA is now below 3 and Severino got an ERA when he gave up a run.   Oh well, it's just .90 and he can lower it next time.  Anyway, two really encouraging starts.

I went to Trenton today . Severino's control was a little off, but was 94 95 hitting 97. His Change up is world class. he should be in SWB soon.

Scout once told me that a pitchers regular season velo usually starts showing up in mid-May if the weather is "traditional."

Betances velocity is right where it was last April. Maxed out at 97.9 MPH on April 19, 2014. Today 97.2 MPH. Bigger velocity ahead.

Some of the depth is coming back to Betances curveball too, which is a clear indicator of arm speed. I think he'll be fine.

I really like Chris Martin too fwiw.

A much bigger test the next four games.

F'ing A.

Yet another reason why you should build your team on as many big bats as possible, defense be damned.

But speaking of pitching, Greene pitched well again yesterday, it's time to stomach.

Would be thrilled if we win 2/4 against the Tigers.

An encouraging start from CC, but until proven otherwise the offense sucks v. good pitching and has for years.

It's why they need as many plus bats as possible; defense doesn't matter. That means and Refs and Sanchez, in some role.

If this manager and GM think defense is more important than offense, that is one more reason why they should be fired, and there are already a lot of reasons to do it.

Not to excuse the non-performance of the offense, but is there some spell on Girardi that doesn't allow him to pull CC before 100 pitches?

Here we go with this jibberish again.

Refsnyder isnt exactly hitting the cover off the ball with this .262/0/2 slash line isn't going to help this club.

His 4 E4's would hurt this pitching staff.

Sanchez has been worse than that offensviely.

Given what we've seen of him at virtually every level of MiLB, 42 at-bats shouldn't outweigh the hundreds of other at-bats in which he excelled.

One of the main arguments against bringing him up is that his confidence would get shot if he made errors at the major-league level. But I would argue that by keeping him down there when his bat is ready because "defense, son," his confidence is actually suffering at the moment, which may be contributing to the number of errors.

And I said it before, but Didi really needs to get it together defensively if he's not going to hit. At least Drew has shown signs of life with the bat.

Hey Anon, you know less about baseball than someone who never watched a game.

The larger point is that it has been obvious since then end of the 2009 season that the offense was vulnerable to a decline because their lynchpins, A-Rod, Jeter, and Posada were all getting dangerously old.

So instead of embarking on an incremental youth movement they traded for an already declining Granderson (look at his spray charts from early in his career through 2010), an early sign of already diminishing bat speed.

Then there was the issue of a very valuable Swisher nearing free agency after the 2012 season, and of course, the looming PED crackdown as Selig tried to repair his hideously mendacious and hypocritical legacy.

Yet the offense was permitted to further decline, with the only additions being Wells, Youk, Hafner, and then McCann, Beltran and Ellsbury.

(I like Ellsbury, but he isn't an impact bat no matter how much he makes.)

Each of them were either old, or declining, or one-dimensional.

That's ridiculous.

So again, that's why they need a commitment to young offense.

Without it, given the existing CBA, it's hard to imagine a way out of this COMPLETELY AVOIDABLE and FORESEEABLE messs.

So Granderson was already declining when he hit 40+ hrs?

OK.

No insults. please. Refute each other's points, but don't try to refute each other.

Austin Jackson is a very average player when his BABIP isn't cartoonishly high. I had no problem with that trade and still don't.

At 6:25 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I guess some people wanted the Yankees to keep Austin Jackson cause he was a home grown Yankee and younger than Granderson.

Austin turned out to be a bust. While the Yankees got a few decent seasons from Granderson

At 6:38 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

In fairness, Austin Jackson wasn't a bust, he just wasn't as good as Granderson outside of his inflated BABIP year in 2012. But I would take Jackson + Scherzer (which is what Detroit ended up with) over Granderson any day.

Wait. I have some cherries to go pick.

You might also recall that Dombrowski used Cashman to get Scherzer.

But whatever.

Things are going great since 2009.

The way that A None judges young players, if Didi was a homegrown Yankee, he would consider him a… Wait for it… was a homegrown Yankee, he would consider him a… Wait for it… A bust

The Tigers have won as many Championships the Yankees have since 09.

Have some patience with young kids, he is after all replacing an icon. Ifor some reason he fails than Drew can play SS and the Yanks can make a deal for a 2B

At 8:43 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Should have made a deal with Cano while he was still under his previous contract. But I digress.

Jagielo is off to a hot start. Hope at least one of the AA third baseman pan out.

At 8:18 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I have patience, dude. But unlike you, I would also have patience for Murphy as the starting C, Refs as the starting 2B, and either Austin or Heathcott as soon as they are ready.

But given the way you view prospects, if Didi had been here for hie entire career, he would be just another bust.

So cut the shit about trading for a 2B.
