Yanks Stuff

It was learned today that Yankee catching prospect Luis Torrens will miss the whole season with a shoulder injury.   This is a blow to the system, as he was perhaps the most natural catcher out of the IFA's they have paid and turned into catchers like Montero and Sanchez.   So he loses a year and Charleston will probably now have a college catcher.

Meanwhile, if this casts uncertainty on his future, it's a good thing the Yanks have the 16th pick.  Early projections seem to show a couple of prep catchers in that #16 window.  Might be a year to pick a few.

Ugh, really hate to hear that. Had high hopes for Torrens. Still do, but missing a year sucks.

Sure does.

Got to hit it in the draft, now.

Hey Phil- Where did you see this was confirmed? Last news I saw was from Eppler saying he was still undergoing tests to determine the severity.

Either way, shoulder injuries are always tricky so I'm hoping for the best.

Pitching rich draft..no need to make a panic move yet..

I'll keep my fingers crossed on this - Eppler is usually straight forward when it comes to injuries, so hopefully the tests come back with some encouraging results.

Sad. Sanchez's performance in AAA takes on more significance now.

yeah and we don't have enough catching for all the short season teams as of right now.

With Torrens, this is really a bad break. Yankees signed him a couple of seasons ago, and immediately converted him to Catcher. He seems to have taken to it very well. He threw out over 40% of would-be base runners last year. And I heard solid things from the Coaching staff when I went to Staten Island games last year.

Tough break to lose a year of development at this age (19). Hope he comes back strong.

Wouldn't it make sense to use good receivers, regardless of whether or not they were ML prospects, with the short season teams? I love having catching prospects too, but a good receiver can really help a young pitcher develop in game situations.

Well, with McCann as bad as he is, we need more prospects at C going forward, anyway, but we could be losing our first or second best prospect for the year, so it's a good time to pick some.

I don't disagree.
