Yanks Buy Gonzelz Germen from the Mets

The Yanks just bought another reliever.    Gonzalez Germen is a 27 year old righty from the Mets they must see something in.  They DFA'd Preston Claiborne to make the move so, apparently, they've seen enough of him.   Busy day for the Yanks.  Not Padres busy, but Yanks busy.

It's the one area where they have a track record of success.

All of this only matters if Tanaka and Pineda are healthy and productive.

I still think Girardi's bp mgt. is overrated because of the dangerous ineptitude of his predecessor.

But a really good day for the Yankees overall, so F'ing YAY!

I read a scouting report that says Germen lives off a great fastball but nothing else. Anyone find his velo max ?

@AndrewMarchand: Reading between lines, I wouldn't buy your Refsnyder or Pirela shirts just yet. Sounds like Cashman may still add a 2B.

Ugh. When something is too good to be true...

If they add a 2B, it would be as if they are sickfuck-aholics and need an intervention.

I will also suggest this: If they play Refs and Gregorious on a regular basis, the one who will need replacing is the later.

Of all the things that have concerned me is their seeming amnesia about the importance of establishing a homegrown culture.

Sure, add to it with signings and trades, but there is a near-tangible good derived from producing an in-house culture even if the that core can't match the last Five (leaving Bernie is odious to me).

Sherman says they are not serious about Asdrubal. That they will possibly platoon either Refs or Pirela with a lefty or switch who they've got on a minor league contract right now, like Noonan.

My best guess would be Asdrubal Cabrera if price is right. If not, maybe a trade or it could be Ref & Pirela.

He should run for office. He's got the saying everything while saying nothing thing down.

Nick Punto just released pls refrain

That would be failing an IQ test. This will be his age 37 season coming off a 69 OPS+. Not even back-up worthy.

Platooning at second would be so stupid, as the vast majority of pitchers are RHB and Girardi would rarely actually play Refnsyder with such a plan.

I doubt they plan to do that, I just don't think they're being very specific about further plans right now.

RH batters don't lose nearly as much as LH batters in terms of platoon splits for OPS:

2014 All batters:

RH batters v. RHP:
.247 .303 .381 .684
RH batters v. LHP:
.254 .322 .391 .713

LH batters v. LHP
.240 .302 .345 .647
LH batters v. RHP:
.260 .324 .407 .731

Oh, this is where that idiocy comes from:

Jose Pirela and Rob Refsnyder would vie for the righty at-bats and – as much as they like Refsnyder – Pirela probably has an inside track to make the 25-man roster because the organization would like Refsnyder (a college outfielder) to get more seasoning at the position.
The Yanks have signed two lefty-hitting infielders to minor league contracts – Cole Figueroa and Nick Noonan. Those two could battle for the 25th man and play often against righty starters as the starting second baseman.
It is possible the Yanks could still add a veteran to play second base. But I have been told that they are not serious about free agent Asdrubal Cabrera and that they are not trying to make a significant deal for someone such as Philadelphia’s Cole Hamels.

Starting either of those two the majority of games is laughable.

I think Refsnyder will be the 2B. I also think they plan to sign Moncada.

Obviously, I hope so, but I view the Yankees as being in a show me phase.

IOW, I have no faith.

All NY teams are like that for me, sadly.

I view the Rangers as being best run, even with their intermittent stupidity. That's crazy.

Chad Jennings
if a guy like Cabrera can be acquired on a good deal, I”m not sure they would/should pass up the opportunity

Jeez, take a stand dude

I don't think they want Cabrera at this point. And I think as far as marketing themselves to Moncada they'll leave things as is at second.

I think if Ref's shows he can handle 2nd he will get the spot.
