Yankees Stuff

Today is the showcase day for Cuban IFA IF Yoan Moncada, and the Yanks will have people in attendance.  This is a huge day for Moncada, and possibly a big day for the Yanks as well.  If they feel Moncada can be a star SS or 2B for them in the mid-term, they have to go for it.  They're already in the penalty for IFA's, and this will the their last chance over the next two years to add this kind of talent - if every scouting report is true.   So a consequential day for Moncada and the Yanks.

In other Yankee news, the Yanks have signed LHP Jose DePaula. Nice to see them re-stock their DePaula stores, as you never want to go too long without one.   DePaula is 26 with more pitch-ability than stuff.  He was going to be rule 5 eligible, so, the Yanks presumably like him better than some of their guys who are rule 5 eligible.  Also, they have given him a spot on the 40, even though he has never pitched in the bigs.   We'll have to what they have in mind for him.

DePaula finally puts this team over the top. Good move.

Not sure I understand this move. Couldn't they wait another 3 weeks to announce it, so they can hide him from the 40 until after the draft?

They must have seen him recently or something. We'll have to see how he does, but it is odd that they are giving up a 40 spot to someone else's overage prospect. At the same time, if they had taken him in the Rule V draft they would have had to keep him on the 25 man roster, all year.

DePaula is another reason why the 40 man issue with Refs never made sense to me. I think it was always about the failure to trust young players unless they have <0 choice. (See Roberts, Brian)

Moncada is the next acid test to see if there is any credible to believe that reason this franchise isn't completely lost at sea, and that's true whether you think that Cashman is a genius or jerk or something in-between.

No one seems to be live tweeting the Moncada showcase.

Agreed. KC has a shutdown BP that took them to the WS

If they don't sign Robertson, the Prado move looks a lot worse. They have so few true strengths, they need to preserve them.

KC got hot at the right time. There was no one reason why they got to the WS.

DePaula is obviously Robertson insurance.

Covering his ass, squared:

“I feel like if we repeated last season 100 times over, we wouldn’t get the kind of offensive performance that we experienced last year,” Cashman said.

DePaula has been mostly used as a starter over his long minor league career.

Expecting the same team to produce different results may seem like the definition of madness, but Cashman believes that a full season of that group of midyear imports, plus a healthy Carlos Beltran, a healthier Mark Teixeira, a well-adjusted Brian McCann, and a little bit of better luck will make this a playoff team.

My ideal rotation out of ST:

Tanaka
Pineda
Greene
Mitchell
CC (since he's starting as long as he is able)

That's part of the reason why I don't want McCarthy. The other part is that isn't good most of the time.

Need to substitute DePaula for Mitchell and then we can go to war!
