Yankees With More Curious Call Ups

First off, the DFA'd Zoilo Almonte for the first time and Matt Daley for about the 11th.  Then they called up Rich Hill and Chris Young, so they'll get 40 spots.   They also called up JR Murphy,  Bryan Mitchell, Chase Whitley, Preston Claiborne, Antoan Richardson and Chaz Roe.

They are really uninterested  in adding any legitimate talent to the 40 till the offseason.   I feel terrible to Kyle Roller who has earned a promotion and won't get one.  Pathetic roster management.

This is why I never bought the 40 man thing with Refs.

It clearly is a 40 man thing for Refs.

As I have pointed out before there is so much crap on the roster that no one would want that they could have lots of room.

I wish someone would claim McCann or Beltran on waivers.

Then there is Claiborne, Romine, Ryan, Wheeler, Hill.

And guys like Headley, Drew, Robertson will open up slots.

But every time they need a slot for a crap veteran. Boom, magic.

So I disagree. It is about not trusting kids.

That's why it took a series of accidents for Greene to get a shot, and why Mitchell can't.

To further LINJ's point, the only reason Betances got a shot was because he was out of options. The fact that Roller and Pirela aren't on the roster shows this team would prefer career journeymen to actual players with upside.

Is impossible to know which person if any is for or against most of their bad decisions All we know is what they are doing isn't working, unless the goal is to fool as many fans as possible.

The 40 business is very suspicious. If you know you're going to add them after the season, add them now. Unless there is some other plan at work and this is an excuse.

They wanted to get to the playoffs for Jeter's last season, but they only made mediocre moves and wouldn't call up the kids who could have helped.

That's not gonna get it done.

The callups are certainly not encouraging. They remind me of the story that Frank Robinson once made the Orioles' team bus stop by a dump so Blefary could get a new glove.

Best case scenario -- and I'm not holding my breath -- is that there will be a mass purge of the 40 at the end of the season for Rule 5 purposes (dare I hope including ARod?), trades, signings, and the like, and that Refs's chance to make the 40 will be to make the team in spring training, when they have more flexibility via the 60-day DL and through other clubs being unable to make waiver claims because of their own 40 issues.

On the negaqtive side, does keeping Refs off the 40 enhance his trade value (albeit marginally)?

I can understand DFAing Almonte. If you aren't going to actually play him when you had him, why bother?

If the Yankees put McCann or Beltran on waivers, is there even a GM in his right mind who would claim them? Remember, Bowden is no longer a GM.

McCann I could see, hoping for a bounceback and he's still a good C, (especially if the GM's team needs a C and is otherwise a legit WS contender). Beltran no way.

Phil, that's what blow my mind about this whole thing. How do you not make moves that could potentially make even a marginal difference when every game counts? There's either a much bigger picture we're not seeing, or management is just incompetent when it comes to filling out a roster.

*blows my mind

They are in quicksand. They have over $100m in what is almost dead money, few impact ML ready prospects, and a risk-averse manager. Once Tanaka went down any team with a reasonable management approach would have sold.

This could be a prolonged drought, but if Hal spends enough that can be a .500 team or close to it, for a long time.

I listened to Francesa during lunch. My guess is that he read these comments.
