Caldera:Yanks Not Getting Rusney Castillo

Peter Caldera has quoted an industry source as saying the Yanks will not sign Rusney Castillo, who they were reported to like as a 2B.   This would seem like another Hal call on a Cuban player.   He was going to cost money, and he might have blocked Refsnyder if they kept him at 2nd next year, but holy frijoles do the Yanks even need the offense he could add.   We'll see what happens over the offseason with the other Cubans, but so far, the Yanks have not been able to get back into the deep end of the pool since Contreras.   Wonder if he banged Hal's chick or something.

Another reason why trading for Prado's contract was epically, monstrously dumb, if you are looking to save money, although TBH, I have no idea if Castillo is worth big bucks.

Thinking about it, maybe it's just as simple as Castillo not wanting to play second base, although to be honest I never thought that made sense because when you think you're smarter than other people and see something they don't, you are often wrong.

If this means they go after the other two Cuban defectors I'm OK with this.

Once this is settled I'll write about Tomas and Moncada.

I think the biggest test of their willingness to spend will be what they do with Robertson. If they let him go that is a really bad sign.

Tomas is the Cuban guy I am really interested in.

As far as not getting Castillo, there could be a million reasons. Maybe he just does not want to play in NY. Maybe he does not want to play 2B. Maybe he demanded a guarantee that he will be on the Major League roster by 08/31/14, so he is eligible for the playoffs.

Or maybe the Yankees feel he is not worth the $$$$$ he is asking.

To blame Hal or Prado's contract is, IMO, just silly, and just grasping at threads........

Of course Castillo might be really good, but they have spent what they want to spend on the other players.

It's not like Hal has been a great owner. To the contrary the franchise has declined under his watch.

What is silly is to be the kind of fan who only wants a guy if his team signs him, and think he's not good if they don't.

I concur with MBN, the blame game really needs to stop.

While I like the idea of Castillo, the fact of the matter is he's listed at 27 y/o and he hasn't played in over a year. It's going to take at least a 5 year deal to sign him which means you're paying for 2 maybe 3 years of his prime and then a decline. I'd be more inclined to spend on him if he were in his low-mid 20's because there would be some upside.

Once you add in external factors such as getting acclimated to MLB and playing professional baseball again, there is a significant amount of risk.

I'd much rather allocate these funds and invest in Yoan Moncada and Yasmani Tomas, both players who have defected and have significant upside.

Invoking the blame game is another way to avoid accountability.

The Yankees print money. Signing one shouldn't preclude signing another two, especially when you have tons of money for declining veterans whose best years are behind them.

Take Beltran. Two short years ago, they passed on him. claiming that he was too much of an injury risk.

But somehow they felt it was just fine to give him 3 years at 37.

So sure, no blame game, no facing the painful mismanagement.

This team is run like Branch Rickey on um, steroids.

Everything you say is pure speculation though. You literally stated they won't sign him because they traded for Prado's contract and now need to save money.

You then speculate that they passed on Beltran because he was too much of an injury risk. Let me guess, you got that from the media?

You can enjoy pointing fingers, it's not going to get you anywhere.

It's not speculation that they signed McCann even though the strength of their system was catching.

It's not speculation that they gave Ellsbury monster money even though he doesn't offer monster production.

It's not speculation to say that they whiffed by not signing Chapman, Puig, Abreu, or Cespedes, even though they would have cost less combined than some of their expensive free agents.

You can speculate on how well they are run. The facts are otherwise.

So why should I trust their judgment on Castillo when they have made so many mistakes?

I prefer finger pointing to waving pom poms. But I'm fine with you doing the latter.

I will say this — based on someone I spoke to recently who would know, contrary to popular belief, the Yankees do not have an unlimited amount of money. TIFWIW.

LINJ,

Considering you didn't address EITHER of my points and instead brought up totally separate ones, further validates my assertion that you're just grasping at threads to point a finger and complain.

You can say they whiffed on all three of those Cuban players but you have no clue if they made an offer or what the circumstances were.

No one is asking you to "trust their judgement" but rather rely on facts instead of speculation which is clearly what you're doing.

I'm not waving pom pom but I'm for sure as hell not crying over spilled milk.

"I'm not waving pom pom but I'm for sure as hell not crying over spilled milk."

Ditto.

It is what it is. Let's move on. Pointing fingers is not the way to view this, but to each their own. If LINJ wants to blame almost everything he does not about the Yankees on Hal's perceived stinginess, or Girardi's bullpen management, or Cashman's GM abilities, or whatever, that's just him. Maybe it makes him feel better.

I do not have to accept these "excuses", especially since we do not have complete access or knowledge to what really goes on in the Yankees' front office.

Guys, talk about the teams and not each other, please. Thanks!

You're right, Kale. My apologies.

Luis Severino is back for Trenton tonight, I'm excited to say the least.

So am I. He was killing it before the break.

My apologies also.

Anyway - good to hear about Severino. I wonder if the DL stint was really a case of "innings management" on the part of the Yankees.
