Martin Prado is a Yankee

The Yanks have also acquired versatile Martin Prado here at the deadline.  Don't know who for yet and the people reporting don't seem interested in telling us.  Will update.

Dear lord, they say the deal was for Peter O'Brien.  Now Pete doesn't get on base enough, but he has rare power.   Got to make sure on this one.   Would have saved O'Brien for a good player.

Unless the payroll is gong to $300m I see no reason to take on his contract.

The Yankees likely see him as a super utility player and insurance in case A-Rod can't/won't play third and Headley leaves after this season.

That said, I wasn't high on O'Brien as being anything more than a trade chip, but for Prado? Eh...

Again, what is the ultimate payroll ceiling?

Two more years at $22m and a declining OPS+.

That's expensive insurance.

All they care about is fooling fans that are willing to be fooled.

Personally, I always liked Prado. Versatile, and capable. Some pop. Some speed.

Not a terrible guy to have around. And not a bad price, although I think they could have used O'Brien elsewhere. But this is selling high on him. Yankees must believe he will not work out defensively at any position, and will be a DH. They already have too many guys for teat job.

There is no way anyone can say this is selling hiigh on O'Brine.

Chad Jennings:

"Stephen Drew will be the Yankees regular second baseman, and Martin Prado is going to get the bulk of his time in the outfield, mostly in right field.

“We’re obviously trying to improve our offensive output and give Joe’s a lot of flexible options,” Cashman said.

Brian Cashman just announced that Brian Roberts will be designated for assignment.

Also stating that Refsnyder will be at 2B the rest of the season, and an option for 2015."

Not a terrible overall day. Including the 2 prior deals (Headley and McCarthy), the only Farm guys of note we lost were Depaula and O'Brien. We dumped Roberts and Johnson.

I can live with the overall activity done in July.

If he can't field, and his poor OBP continues, I have no problem dealing him for Prado. And, believe it or not, there is only a 6 year difference (30 vs. 24). Not like they acquired a 36 year old.

I'm good with this.

Power hitters are at a premium. He's still relatively young. 1B isn't a defensive position. What did they get back? A declining, expensive, over 30 player who doesn't hit enough to fill any position of need going forward.

I mean what do people think the market is for a 23 year old, position-less player who has a sub .300 obp and strikes out in over 20% of his at bats?

I for one have seen him this year at Trenton on a few different occasions and he literally has ZERO plate discipline. He swings at practically anything and unfortunately, he doesn't have elite bat speed or hand/eye that would allow him to hit everything he swings at.

Some people think this skill can be learned but I for one do not, especially after a certain age. You either know the strike zone or you don't.

Prado adds versatility and it was only 2 years ago when he was the centerpiece of the Justin Upton deal. We have people in here acting like 30 years old is the new 40. You make this trade 10/10 especially when we have a lot of holes to fill this season and next.

Billy Martin;

Thank you for your opinion posted just above. A voice of reason. I can't believe that anyone would think O'Brien is too valuable to trade. Even for a non-star like Prado, who has come on the past 2 months after a slow start to 2014.

Maybe if O'Brien had some defensive chops, or better plate discipline. But right now he has neither.

I was perfectly willing to trade O'Brien because he has no plate disc, but I would have preferred to have spent in in a larger trade that brought something better back. I don't care that he;s gone or Prado is here.
