Yanks Crush A's

Grandy hit a two run shot in the first and the Yanks never looked back. He collected more RBI's later, and they just rolled 10-3 over the A's. Freddie Garcia got the win and gave them another good start. Everyone is starting to hit. They are now sitting Po against lefties so they really should call up Montero, who hit a triple and a homer tonight for Scranton. This road trip has turned around. Go Yanks!

Complete Game 4-Hit Shutout!

Wow! What a break we are receiving from the experimental surgery that has revived Bartolo Colon! He was just filthy getting whatever he needed whenever he needed and throwing strikes! Tony Pena deserves a huge raise! Tex hit another jack, and Cano had a double and a triple. Brett Gardner scored a tack on run by walking, stealing 2nd, stealing third and scoring on a fly ball. 5-0 Yanks win and boy, did we need that. Maybe this road trip is now 2-2, but trending up. Go Yanks!

Btw, the MLB draft is coming up, and I hope to find some time to write about that again this year. Check last year's June archive for my Yankees draft stuff.

CC Slays 'Em

CC pitched 8 innings of 1 run ball today, to secure the Yanks first win against the lowly Mariners. Having lost the first two games of the series, the Yanks needed their ace to pitch like an ace. He did. The offense also showed signs of life, but those might just be signs of streakiness. I still think they need to call up Montero, who may be getting prospect fatigue down at AAA. Pendleton pitched a scoreless ninth. Call up Montero and Go Yankees!

Yanks Take Rubber Game

Andruw Jones was 3 for 3 with 2 2-run bombs today as the Yanks easily beat the Jays behind Freddie Garcia. Garcia got his third win, and other than some of the slumping starters, Joe Girardi should get some credit for using his bench. It was easier when Chavez was healthy. Cash should get credit for Garcia and Jones, as they won the game for us today and they didn't arrive till late in the offseason. Tex also homered and he is heating up. Jeter was 1-3 with 2 walks. He should be walking a lot more as the leadoff guy, and also as an old player. Our outfield D is also excellent when we have Gardner, Grandy and Dickerson out there. Though Grandy does occasionally have trouble judging balls in front of him. Still, it beats the era between titles. Go Yanks!

Yanks Serve Pie!

A Mark Teixeira single gave the Yanks their first walkoff win of the year as they came back from a 4-1 deficit to win 4-5 over the upstart Jays. Just a tremendous win, and hopefully a sign of great things to come for this year's team. Go Yanks!

Big Inning!

The Yanks used an 8 run 7th inning to clobber the Mets again. Oddly, there were no homers in the rally but it did go on in spite of two more stupid bunt calls from the bench. Maybe the Yanks luck is turning. Nova was off, but still only allowed 3 runs in 6.2. And balls started falling in with men on base. Hmm. Go Yanks!

Yanks Pound Mets

Behind homers from Martin, Teixeira, Granderson and ARod, the Yanks pounded the Mets 7-3. Tex is really heating up. Grandy's was his 15th! He's having a monster season. Nice to see ARod get going, and AJ collect another win. Robertson, Joba and Ayala were sound in relief. Go Yanks!

Laying Down the Law

The Yanks just got done crushing the Orioles 13-2 after last nights late inning drama. CC, like Colon on Wednesday, pitched 8 scoreless innings. He's coming around, but his biggest pitch came in the 1st inning. On the way to giving up 5 Yankee runs in the first, the Orioles hit Robbie Cano with a pitch. Coupling that with the Dickerson beaning last night, CC did what he had to do. And with 2 out in the first inning, CC nailed Markakis with a 94mph fastball right in the small of his back. Message delivered. Tex and Nunez (in for ARod late) homered. Jeter, Swisher and Gardy all tripled. There were lots of doubles, too. Amauri Sanit struggled in his MLB debut giving up all the Oriole runs in the bottom of the 9th. Yanks 13, O's 2. Mets up next. Go Yanks!

Yanks Win in 15

Hector Noesi was clutch in his MLB debut and Robbie Cano slugged a two run triple to break up a 1-1 tie in the top of the 15th, to win the game for the Yanks. Brett Gardner sacrificed Robbie home to make it a 4-1 final. Meanwhile, Noesi got out of jam after jam in his 4 innings of work. He showed a good fastball and a nice assortment of pitches. Seemed like the ump squeezed him a bit, as he chalked up 4K's and 4 BB's. He could end up playing an Aceves roll for the Yanks. Bartolo Colon was the Yankee starter and pitched 8 innings of shutout ball. He's going to win comeback player of the year and was hitting 97 on the gun. Mariano blew the save. There was a scare after Cano's triple in the ninth, when recent call-up Chris Dickerson was beaned! It will be interesting to see if the Yanks have anything to say about that. 2 in a row! Go Yanks!

Rangers Sign Christian Thomas

The Rangers are apparently about to announce the signing of Christian Thomas to a three year deal. Thomas is either the Rangers #1 or #2 prospect depending on what you think of Chris Kreider and he has been an elite scorer in the OHL. Undersized, he has a big time shot, and works all areas of the ice Just a very good prospect, who may even end up being elite on the NHL level. Great to have him signed and sealed. Go Rangers!

UPDATE: It's official! And the Rangers have also signed Goalie Prospect Scott Stacjer. He actually reminds me quite a bit of Ricky. Go Rangers!

Feeling Better?

Apparently, Alex Rodriguez smacked a pair of homers to bust out of his slump and lead the Yankees to a 6-2 win over Tampa in Tampa. Ivan Nova was excellent and got the win. Brett Gardner continues to build. Let's hope this starts something. Go Yanks!

Yanks Get Swept at Home

This is pretty simple. The Yanks are listless and looking old and sloppy. Bring up some youth. The Yanks should call up Montero tomorrow. He's their best hitting prospect since Mantle, and helping him along with engage the veterans, just as bringing Cano and Wang up did in 2005. They need a shot of youth, and Montero's the guy. It's absolutely silly to have him hitting .336 in AAA in his second year there. He was even hotter before a groin injury and is heating up again. Make the call! Go Yanks!

Kreider Turning Pro?

Rumors all over the internet are saying Chris Kreider is leaving BC to turn pro with the Rangers. Many of the rumors are coming straight out of BC. It seems that Stepan and McDonagh might have helped him see the light while they were all playing for Team USA over the past few weeks. This is great news for the Rangers. Kreider is an absolutely elite skater with amazing speed, and he couples it with true power forward size and good hands. You don't really see this kind of package often, and he's still got some development ahead of him, but if they team him with a good C and Stepan and Artie both look like they're gonna be good C's, he's gonna score and score lots. His speed can be a game changer through the neutral zone. He was one of the Rangers top two prospects and it looks like they're getting him signed. Huge. Go Rangers!

Rest in Peace, Boogey Man

The Rangers lost something big yesterday when Forward Derek Boogard was found dead in his home. The Boogey man had been the free agent component to the "get tough" policy the Rangers practiced in the 2010 draft. He wasn't active very often before he was concussed, and never really got it back together. Little guy Brandon Prust ended up filling his fighting role. Still he had been happy to sign with the Rangers and the Rangers were glad to have him. The cause of death is unknown. Sorta puts the Yankee struggles in perspective, doesn't it.

Rangers Sign Jason Wilson

Yesterday, Blogspot was upgrading some stuff, so I couldn't post. But, yesterday, the Rangers did do something I am really in favor of and that was sign Jason Wilson, last year's 5th rounder. Wilson is like a full sized version of Brandon Prust, and at 6'3" 209 people aren't as eager to mess with them. But, he plays with an edge and has some offensive ability. And they did it the right way: if you want a third or fourth liner, develop them in your system, don't trade one of your best scoring prospects for one. Go Rangers!

Yankees Win!

Yanks just beat the Royals 3-1 and Joba Chamberlain pitching the 8th in place or Soriano threw a 9 pitching inning, k'ing 2 and getting a grounder! Wow! I remember a guy like that. If Joba is getting his stuff back, this could be a huge development. Meanwhile David Robertson got out of a big jam in the 7th, and Garcia collected another win. Jeter and Gardy had big hits, and ARod drove in 2 with a two out single for the margin of victory. Quick game! Go Yanks!

Rangers Swap Werek for Lindberg

The Rangers today announced that they have traded away point a game junior C Ethan Werek to the Phoenix Coyotes for Swedish League C Oscar Lindberg. Werek is actually a few months older than Linberg. Both will turn 20 later this year. Unless Linberg has grown, we're losing some size in the transaction. I don't really understand this deal right now, but perhaps Lindberg has grown or just dazzled them somewhere. He is a cousin of Jan Erixon who was a long time Ranger and has coached him in Sweden. If he had an Erixon vote and and a Hedberg vote, that might have made this happen. As it is, I'm not sure I see it. Both players are former second round picks. I had very high hopes for Werek. After further review, this one looks like we traded a top 6 type for yet another bottom 6 type. Lindberg, at least, is said to be good on faceoffs.

In other Ranger news, they finally DID, sign Roman Horak! The 19 year old broke out this year with over a point a game in the Western Hockey league. So that is unabashedly good news. Go Rangers!

Ahem

On the first warm weekend of baseball the Yanks have experienced this season, their late lamented Captain came to life. Flashing looser legs in the field, he finally reengaged them in his swing and the results today were 4 for 6 with two homers and a stolen base. His legs feel better and now he looks like Derek Jeter. Lean players usually last, and that's why I wasn't too eager to start piling on the Jeter's done bandwagon. Now this is just one weekend, but I have a feeling the tear will last and the Yanks will be rewarded for their patience. Meanwhile, Grandy hit his 11th as the Yanks clubbed their way back for a win in Texas. The lineup should get going, and the pitching has been solid so far, with the exception of some bullpen blowups. Go Yanks!

Nova Dominates!

Ivan Nova pitched 7 strong innings of 2 hit, no run ball, and Curtis Granderson hit two more bombs a the Yanks beat Texas 4-1. Nova was producing grounders like Chien Ming Wang used. If he is really a late blooming breakout player, he can take a ton of pressure off of the FO and organization and maybe we can keep our best prospects instead of trading them for a starter. Go Yanks!

Yanks Lose

CC was a little off, and the Yanks made some baserunning errors. Thus they lost. They'll get back on the winning track tomorrow. Do you realize they haven't had any warm weather yet? Go Yanks!

Yanks Win Again!

Bartolo Colon was excellent again today, giving up 3 runs over 7 innings. Unfortunately, Verlander was going for the Tigers, and the Yanks were hitting into bad luck every time they had men on base. Brett Gardner had a single, two walks, a run and a great catch, and seems to be waking up. Anyway, with the game tied at three in the top of the ninth, things looked like the bad luck wouldn't end as Grandy got thrown out when he overslid a base he had cleanly stolen. With 1 out, though, Tex walked ARod got and infield hit, and Swish singled home Tex. With Martin up and ARod on third, the Tiger catcher missed one, and ARod scored from 3rd. Mo pitched a scoreless 9th, for his 11th save. Keep rolling. Go Yanks!

Meanwhile, all of the tests on Phil Hughes came back negative, so they're sending him to another specialist. Yeesh. Feel better, Phil!

Value, Value, Value!

It's a day later, and I still can't get over how well the Giants were able to do at the 2011 draft. They were lucky! But it was their strict adherence to their BPA strategy that created their luck. While most other teams were reaching all over the place and trading around, the Giants sat patiently with their 8 picks and calmly collected the best player on the board each time their turn came up. And when I saw teams reached, I'm not just talking about all of those non-franchise QB's, I'm saying there's no way a 26 year old guard was the best player of the board when the Eagles picked. That was happening a lot, so don't take this as me just picking on the Eagles. They also made some nice picks, and as always got a player or two I had earmarked for the Giants.

In the first, the Giants watched in wonder as teams reaching around for "needs" caused Prince Amukamara to fall right into their laps. Had that not happened they most likely would have picked Mark Ingram, but since it did, they rushed to take a player they had in their top ten. Amukamara is exactly what the Giants are looking for in a corner. He has good size, is strong, can play press or off, and is an incredible athlete who has been profiled on Sports Science! Under George Young, and now under Jerry Reese, the Giants have loved taking their freaks, see Jason Pierre-Paul and Linval Joseph last year. And the Prince is certainly a physical freak. What's more he is highly intelligent and a very good kid.

In the second, the Giants liked Marvin Austin, a player who they had in their top 15, and Ben Iljalana, the Tackle from Villanova. When the Colts traded ahead of the Giants, to take Iljalana, the Giants just pulled the trigger on Marvin. Marvin, who had been one of the few underclassmen actually caught taking benefits from an agent, had used his suspension to get into absolutely magnificent shape, even better shape than he was in during his junior year at UNC. In other words, he had gotten his freak on, and destroyed the combine. The Giants did a lot of work on him to make sure he was really a good kid who made a bad decision, and were thrilled with what they discovered. They would have taken him even if Ben was still on the board. What they now have is another freak for the DL who comes to the Giants wanting to prove everyone else wrong. He is the ultimate three tech, complete with a quick first step, and represents another massive steal for the Giants who like to get after the the QB from all directions.

In the third, as I held my breath thae Jerrel Jernigan would make it down to them, the Giants just sat back, didn't try to trade up, and pulled the trigger when the ultimate GTP playmaker landed at their pick. I have had my Giant biased eyes on this kid for a couple of years and I am so happy that they got him. He's a terrific return man for punts and kicks, and an awesome run after the catch wide receiver. We haven't had this kind of return man/3rd down specialist since Meggett. And he is faster and even shiftier than Meggett was. He didn't have a QB who could throw deep at Troy, so he'll also be a guy who can use his great speed to get deep for the GMen. He's smaller than our other guys, but his huge hands, and great strength make up for a lot of that. We finally have a gamebreaker for the O and the return teams. He will be the toast of camp. Just another great pick.

In the fourth, the Giants kind of surprised me. They took Jim Brewer a huge right tackle from Indiana. But there was more to the story than I knew at the time. Brewer had been a great high school basketball player until he literally grew out of the sport. There arent a lot of 6'6" 300 pounders in hoops, and he didn't eat his way there, he's just that massive. What's more, it turns out that he retained all of his basketball athleticism and the Giants think they can turn him into a 6'6" 330 pound OLT. Guys like that, complete with long arms and great feet are RARE. When you can get one who's just a bit of a project in the 4th, you pull the trigger and don't look back. Okay, so now the Giants have Brewer, Beatty, Andrews, and Diehl as left tackle candidates. That's a lot, but they may even be able to trade one of them for picks if they all look sharp in pre.

The Giants didn't have a 5th, but they were probably all still celebrating their first four picks. But not so much that they didn't have 4 more excellent picks in them.

Starting in the 6th, the Giants got two coach on the field types, a freak outside linebacker and a speedy back who will finally replace what Derrick Ward used to give us as Wind. In the 6th alone, they took three violent men.

Greg Jones was the insanely productive middle backer for MSU. This was a kid, who when you saw him on TV, the announcers would talk about what a high pick he was destined to be. But as the DL declined for his senior year, so did his production and people started picking him apart. Not the Giants, Jones is a slightly undersized, super productive tackling machine, who is an absolute clone of what Antonio Pierce was before his steep decline. This guy plays so much faster than he times because, he piles amazing instincts on top of a massive amount of filmwork. This makes him, like Pierce, a coach on the field, and those guys are good to have as you'll all recall from our last Super Bowl run. He was a violent hitter and tackler to begin with, but now that he dropped several rounds in the draft, he's could really take it out on some folks.

Tyler Sash was a top SS prospect who also fell on his athletic limitations, after all he did was make plays and huge plays for Iowa. Somehow, with whatever limitations he has, he was always in the right place at the right time, collecting 13 interceptions and averaging over 30 yards per reception return, And like Jones he is a coach on the field type, who takes pleasure in the physical part of the game. Just a terrific piece for the Giants and player who should have gone higher.

Jacquian Williams seems like someone the Giants had stashed or something through their connections at USF. When you see tape of this guy, you see and absolutely long, sick athlete who runs around blowing people up and providing sticky coverage on backs and TE's. He's a kid who went to both the same Junior College and regular college as JPP. In other words, he was on the freak program. Some of the confusion that left him undrafted till we took him with our third sixth may have come from confusion over his weight. He was list as 216, but has been working out and was drafted at 235. This guy has all the talent to be an impact OLB for the Giants. It's up to him and the coaches now, and he's a kid who wants to be great. Yahtzee!

In the 7th the Giants were bored, so they added more explosivity. Da-Rel Scott, is a 5'11, 211 pound back who runs consistently in the 4.3's. After a huge Sophomore year at Maryland, he became more of a rotational back and his numbers fell. But he is the real deal with the ball in his hands and he can catch it, too. In other words, he's the third down threat the Giants have been lacking since Wind took that big contract from Tampa. Wind II is even faster, and once they give him the high and tight lessons, he'll be making huge plays in our running game. He's much faster than Brad and Jake and is a great complement to those guys, should both stay.

It was just a huge draft that was reminiscent of past drafts like the `86. `89, `04, `05, and `07 drafts, maybe even more "ecologically sound." We'll see. But the Giants are on cloud nine right now, and they should be. Go Giants!
